video-work "alone"

Alone / Sama

This collage-like video work addresses a repressed period from the so-called communist era in the former SFR Yugoslavia, namely the women's labor camps. The focus is on the camp on the island Sveti Grgur and female labor camp on Goli Otok called “R - V”. The experiences of these women as well as the island Sveti Grgur − unlike the experiences of the imprisoned men on the island Goli Otok − were and are hardly spoken about and thus have their fates never become a part of the collective memory.

The video work Alone / Sama recalls their stories and tells them from the perspectives of three women: a labor camp supervisor, a political prisoner and an artist who makes a film about these two.

My ambition isn’t to paint a black and white picture but to portray the complexity of a system that preaches a sense of community while suppressing any individuality. I also want to offer the viewer a strategy of resistance and responsibility: active remembering.

Realisation of the video project Sama / Alone is funded by Dachverband freie darstellende Künste Hamburg e.V., Freundinnen und Freunde der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and Alfred Toepfer Stiftung
